History of Kelheim
Kelheim was a Celtic settlement and Roman fort. The Liberation Hall on Michelsberg was built by King Ludwig I to commemorate the liberation wars against Napoleon (1842–1863). The Danube Gorge between Kelheim and Weltenburg is a natural wonder.

The Danube Gorge near Kelheim is one of Bavaria's most spectacular natural landscapes: the Danube squeezes through 5.7 kilometres of narrow limestone cliffs rising up to 70 metres vertically from the water. At the end of the gorge lies Weltenburg Monastery – Bavaria's oldest monastery (approx. 620 AD) with a magnificent Baroque church by Cosmas Damian Asam. The Weltenburg monastery brewery produces the world's oldest monastery beer. Accessible by boat or on foot.
