The two formerly separate villages of Garmisch and Partenkirchen were merged in 1935. The 1936 Winter Olympics left numerous sports facilities. The Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak, makes the region Germany's most popular winter sports destination. Composer Richard Strauss lived and died here.
