The Augustinian Canons' Foundation (est. 1102) was the political centre of the region for centuries. The Kehlsteinhaus at 1,834 metres elevation, internationally known as the "Eagle's Nest", crowns the Kehlstein mountain near Berchtesgaden. Originally built in 1938 as a teahouse gift for Hitler, today it is a tourist attraction with an unrivalled alpine panorama. A historic elevator through the rock takes you directly into the building. The restaurant offers Bavarian cuisine with views of Berchtesgaden, the Königssee and the Salzburg Alps.
